Trump Tells Americans to “Hold On” While Spanberger Actually Offers Solutions for Working Families

February 25, 2026

WASHINGTON – Following President Trump’s State of the Union address, the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy Executive Director Sondra Goldschein released the following statement:

“Last night, President Trump told the country that the economy is strong and costs are coming down. For working families, that simply doesn’t line up with reality.”

“Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger offered a different kind of leadership — rooted in the real challenges families face and focused on solutions, not on touting a ‘stunning economic turnaround’ that simply hasn’t made it to families’ kitchen tables.”

“The truth is: costs remain high where it matters most— groceries, housing, child care, rent and health care. American families are stretching every dollar just to cover the basics. Rather than easing that burden, the President and congressional Republicans are doubling down on policies that add to it—unconstitutional tariffs that drive up prices on everyday goods and health care cuts that force families to make impossible tradeoffs.”

“As Governor Spanberger laid out, families measure the economy by whether they can pay their bills on time, stay in their homes, keep their health coverage and afford care when they need it. It’s time for meaningful relief, not rhetoric. She said it best: ‘Is the president working to make life more affordable for you and your family?’ We all know the answer is no.”

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy is fighting for a future where all people can afford to care for themselves and their loved ones. We do this by building political power to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care and elder care.
