WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Republican leadership and members are going to great lengths to oppose a rule change, championed by Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, which would allow new parents in Congress to vote by proxy for 12 weeks.
“We already knew that Republicans don’t support popular paid family and medical leave proposals, but this is next level,” said Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy Executive Director Sondra Goldschein. “They would rather risk their majority than make this small, reasonable accommodation for their colleagues—including fellow Republicans!—who are brand-new parents. It’s eye-opening that this is the hill they would choose to die on—support for working parents.”
Polling data shows 82% of Americans support paid leave.

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy is fighting for a future where all people can afford to care for themselves and their loved ones. We do this by building political power to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care and elder care.
