Republican Budget Prioritizes Tax Cuts While Slashing Programs Working Families Depend On

May 22, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget package that would rip away health care and food assistance from working families, while handing trillions in permanent tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. In fact, this single piece of legislation would result in the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in U.S. history. The bill would cut $600 billion from Medicaid and eliminate the Affordable Care Act tax credits, cut over $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food aid, and cement Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy at a cost of over $3.8 trillion

In response to this Republican budget, Executive Director of the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy Sondra Goldschein, released the following statement:

“Working families are already facing impossible choices — between paying the bills, feeding their kids, and caring for loved ones. This bill would only make their personal finances worse. It kicks millions off Medicaid, guts food assistance, and locks in massive tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. At a time when American families are clamoring for relief from high prices, this budget delivers another blow — along with hundreds of broken promises to the constituents these Republican lawmakers are supposed to represent.”

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy is fighting for a future where all people can afford to care for themselves and their loved ones. We do this by building political power to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care and elder care.
