WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after Republicans in the Senate voted to advance legislation that would kneecap working families to fund tax breaks for billionaires, Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy executive director Sondra Goldschein released the following statement:
“Imagine sitting down with your child and explaining to them that you are struggling to afford groceries, despite working a full-time job. Imagine visiting your aging parents or grandparents, who are rationing life saving medicine because they’ve lost health coverage. If Senate Republicans get their way, millions of Americans won’t have to imagine these scenarios, because it will become their reality.
“Trump and congressional Republicans are forcing these impossible decisions on working families just to line the pockets of the ultra-rich. Health care and food assistance are not just line items in a budget – they are a matter of life and death for American families.”
Goldschein’s comments come after a ‘fiery speech’ from an unexpected critic of the bill. On Sunday night, North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis took to the Senate floor and called this legislation what it is: a betrayal. He rightly called out the impact Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” will have on the 663,000 North Carolinians “who are eligible and qualified for Medicaid.” If they were actually working for their constituents instead of billionaires, Tillis’ colleagues would have followed his lead.

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy is fighting for a future where all people can afford to care for themselves and their loved ones. We do this by building political power to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care and elder care.
